Christmas Isn’t Always a Hallmark Card – 10 Funny Ideas

Sometimes I look at those cards. You know the pretty ones with the happy families on the front? My life just doesn’t look like that. No snowmen – it’s like 55 today in WI. No sleigh rides, no happy horses. Where do they get these ideas? Who really lives like that anyway?

Maybe I should start my own card line. Ones for real life.

10 Funny Ideas for Real Life Christmas Cards:

  1. Let’s have multiple Christmases this year to make sure everyone can come. Yeah, splitting time with the ex’s just makes the Holiday more Merry!
  2. Do I really have to buy a present for the ex from the kids? Does it have to be nice?
  3. Another Holiday? Another family fight? Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
  4. Spiked punch or unspiked? Silver bells, silver bells…
  5. Bills or presents – that is the question!
  6. Are you coming unglued? Yes, me too – let’s try some tape.
  7. I can’t believe I forgot to buy a present for…let me go find something quick.
  8. Am I a Redneck if I re-gift things I didn’t use from last year?
  9. Where’s that darn tape again? Ugggh!
  10. If I hear one more Christmas Carol I am going to lose my mind. Oh yeah, I think I already wrapped that up!

Here’s to the rest of us – with a bit of humor thrown in to keep our sanity! Don’t worry – God knows us and loves us, humor and all. Think of the big job He has with all his kiddos. Now that is a handful! God bless us everyone!

Let the Power of God Overshadow You This Christmas

There is One who can change all things. One who has the power to make all things new – Jesus Christ. I pray that you open your heart to Him this Holiday Season. Receive the gift of salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit as a deposit of your inheritance. Let the power of God come upon you just as He did to Mary –  And birth new things this season!

Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”

Christmas Video

Here is the Word that our Pastors Mike Batinich and Jeff Hanson shared with us this past Sunday at Janesville Apostolic Ministries in Janesville, WI.

I pray you have a wonderful day celebrating the birth of Jesus! Merry Christmas! Diana

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.” (John 3:16-18 MSG)

Secret Santa

You get to choose one gift — no price restrictions — for any person you want. The caveat? You have to give it anonymously. What gift would you give, and to whom?

Come with  me to Bethlehem. Do you see the star? Something amazing is happening over there. I see the Shepherds. I see the Angels. Let us follow the 3 Wise Men and go see for ourselves.  That would be my present. Let’s go see for ourselves, the Savior born in Bethlehem, Emmanuel – God is with us!

Open your heart to receive Him

An Event for EveryoneMatthew 1_23

There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”

At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises:

Glory to God in the heavenly heights,
Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.

As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed.

Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they’d been told! (Luke 2:8-20 MSG)

Luke 2 Christmas Program

Christ Born of Mary

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife,[a] who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Glory in the Highest

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold,[b] an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

Pine Cones, Rusty Bells, Broken Snowmen, and One Antler Reindeer

Pine cones, Rusty bells, broken snowmen, and one antler reindeer – what? Oh, the lessons we learn along the way. Let me share a story with you.  This year was the first time in the past 3 years we got a real Christmas tree.  Last year I thought I would be ‘special’ and bought a Holly Bush. It died, and man those thorns are sharp, lol! And the years before I think we used my daughters fiber optic mini tree. At that time we had cats and didn’t want to fight the battle with climbing kitties. So for the last three years we have been using some of the shatterproof plastic ornaments.  This year was different.

We moved and had to get rid of the cats. Sad, but true. Anyway, we got a real tree. So Ms. D took out the real ornaments – the glass ones that had been packed away for 4 years. I can’t believe I found the box!  The other night the kids and I were decorating the tree while Bob made his famous Spaghetti sauce.  I did the lights and pearls – and let the kids put the ornaments on.  We still have 2 High School children at home. As they took out and hung the ornaments I took one of those ‘Mom Moments’ to sit back and watch and listen.  I realize I only have 3 more years until they are out of the house and on their own. So we moms hold onto these times and cherish them in our hearts.

I thought it would be the ‘pretty’ ornaments that they would remember. But no – it was the ones that were ‘less than perfect’ that they remembered and talked about.

The Rusty Bell – from Elementary School when all the kids got to watch “Polar Express” at school. I was working at the kids school that year as we started our family over again that year. Me and the kids out on our own.

The One Legged Snowman and One Antlered Reindeer – That was bought from a gas station for $1.  I couldn’t afford a pricey ornament that year. It was a last minute thing on Dec 24th and I gave it to them at the gas pump – no wrapping required.

The Pine Cone – “Ornaments on a budget” as my son said. But they remember these ones. Through the trials, through the tribulations, lives the memory of love – no matter what the cost.

My life lessons learned that night:

  1. Remember the simple things – they last.

  2. Just because it’s broken doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.

  3. Cherish the moments. Hold these things in your heart.

“Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself.” (Luke 2:19 MSG)

Ring the bells and raise your voice
Let there be peace on earth
Let there be peace on earth
Lift your light
Let it shine
Shine, shine, shine
Let there be peace on earth
Let there be peace on earth

I hear the sweetest sound
The sound of hope to come
Together we can bring
Good will to everyone

Fill the air with joyful noise
Ring the bells and raise your voice
Let there be peace on earth
Let there be peace on earth
Lift your light
Let it shine
Shine, shine, shine
Let there be peace on earth
Let there be peace on earth

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Fill the air with joyful noise
Ring the bells and raise your voice
Let there be peace on earth
Let there be peace on earth
Lift your light
Let it shine
Shine, shine, shine
Let there be peace on earth
Let there be peace on earth

Let there be peace on earth

Jesus, Wonderful Counselor

Jesus, Wonderful Counselor (via http://link2power.org)

During this Christmas season, we will hear, sing and meditate on Jesus’ role as our Wonderful Counselor. This term comes from Isaiah’s Messianic prophecy of a child that would be born into this earth to redeem us from our sins and bring us into…

Don’t Judge Scrooge by the Dead Man

imageSo Scrooge returns to his cold, empty house and falls asleep. He gets a visit from his dead partner, Jacob Marley. He dreams of his past, present, and future. Scrooge was given a vision of where he would end up – unless he changed. Remember the children of “Ignorance” and “Want” in the Ghost’s coat? I think that was one of the creepiest parts of that movie! Scrooge had never seen them before. Or if he did, he turned away. What would happen if he looked away now? He would be judged. And left wanting. Remember the tombstone?

What did Ebenezer do when confronted with the truth?

imageHe could have stayed the same. And ended up alone, and dead. Yet he was given an opportunity to change. He was still breathing. He still had life. When he saw the end of the story, he opened up his heart, and received the love of God. There is no love without God. There is no life without God. And Ebenezer saw that.

Ebenezer made a new choice – he repented. He received love and then he was able to give love. At once he awoke from his dream, safe and sound in his warm bed. He was so excited to be alive he shouted out the window wondering what day it was! And he started sharing. He bought that big turkey and brought it to Tiny Tim. He showered the Cratchit family with love and gifts. He went to his Nephew Fred’s house for dinner. His heart was changed. He was now a new man, a new creation. He was warm and loving and generous. Nothing like the old Ebenezer. The old man had died that night, the new Man was born – all after he met Love.

Guess what! It’s not too late! We can all change. Not by our effort, but through the power of God. That same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in YOU with the Holy Spirit!

So this Christmas season don’t judge yourself or others by the dead man!

What’s done is done. Today is a new day full of hope and joy and opportunities! All things are made new once you have met Love – Jesus Christ. Love is greater than any pain, any abuse, or any hurt. The love of God is different from what you might have experienced so far. Open your heart and receive His love today, you will be made new!

“He went to the church, and walked about the streets, and watched the people hurrying to and for, and patted the children on the head, and questioned beggars, and looked down into the kitchens of homes, and up to the windows, and found that everything could yield him pleasure. He had never dreamed of any walk, that anything, could give him so much happiness. (p. 119)”

Christmas Peace

Christmas Peace by Diana Rasmussen

Christmas Peace is a jazz song I wrote last year.  It was only 2 1/2 months after my mom passed away, and 10 1/2 months since my mother in law passed away.  2012 was a very stressful year for our family.  And yet, despite my pain, I wanted peace.  I was seeking peace in the storm.  Have you ever had a day, week, month, year like that? When all you wanted was peace?  It’s funny how it’s when the storm hits that we look for Peace.  Not when things are quiet.  Honestly, I think that is when I forget how awesome peace is.

I think Peace is more than our feelings.  I think peace is more than our circumstances and more than what we are doing.  I think Peace is a Person – Jesus Christ.  Have you met Him?  Not the church thing, I’m talking about Him.  He may or may not even be at Church – seriously.  Don’t let that stop you.  He is waiting for YOU this Christmas. Waiting to take your hand and help you. Waiting to comfort you in your loneliness. Waiting to hold you as you cry in His arms.  Can i introduce you? Meet the Prince of Peace, Jesus, today…

God’s Promise to You:

For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7 NKJV)

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest,

And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” (Luke 2:13-14 NKJV)

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NKJV)

My Prayer For You:

Dear Lord,

You are our Peace this year and always.  Thank you for reminding us that we can have peace, even in this season, because we have You.  You are our Prince of Peace.  Today,  we lay down our packages, our expectations, our disappointments, and our pain to take Your hand.  Lead us Lord, and let us rest in the peace that surpasses all understanding, in Jesus Name.
