Do You Hear the Children Crying? ESCAPE

Weekly Photo Challenge: Escape

IN A NEW POST CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PICTURE THAT MEANS ESCAPE TO YOU.

My post is not all happy and cheerful today.  The word “ESCAPE” has a different meaning if you have ever lived in an abusive home. These pictures were drawn by my young children at our last stay at the Women’s Shelter.  They tell the whole story.  It was what finally gave me the courage to leave – I saw what they saw…

Do You Hear the Children Crying?

© 2013 Diana Rasmussen

Do you hear the children crying
As they scream up and down the halls?
They know daddy hits their mommy
and they watch her as she falls
*
They run to her side daily
till Daddy comes in the room
Then it’s time to run and hide
the next one’s coming soon
*
They say, “God please help my mommy
she needs you Lord today
cuz Daddy’s mad and I’m so sad
he says ‘she’s gonna pay’
*
Why God don’t you kill him?
just stop him in his tracks?
Protect us Lord, we need you now
before he starts to smack”
*
Finally Mommy dials 9-1-1
she made it to the phone
They take Daddy off to jail
and tell us now to run.
If you need help, please call the Hotline.  Save the children…

  1. You are an amazing writer and God has obviously blessed with many talents including music. I am just starting my blog and did not even know that people get awards until I found your site. I know that God has big plans for you… May God continue to bless you exceedingly and abundantly as His Light shines through you….

  2. Pictures certainly can speak louder than words. I remember some of my own kids’ pictures drawn at the shelter – and later in counseling. It broke my heart. Thank you for sharing such a difficult memory.

  3. Very Powerful, Diana. As I read your poem, I immediately thought of Revelation 12:11,

“And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb
    and by their testimony.
And they did not love their lives so much
that they were afraid to die.”

Every time you open your mouth to share your testimony… every time you write your testimony in prose, poetry or song, you succeed in defeating the enemy of our souls, because there is power in your testimony to set not only yourself free, but to set other captives free, not only from their abusive spouses, but from the enemy – that accuser of the brothers and sisters, who deceives those who are being abused into believing that it’s their fault, or that they somehow deserve the abuse, or that they will never be free. Continue to shout your testimony from the mountaintops, my beloved sister… Continue defeating the enemy… Continue offering hope and freedom to the captives in Jesus’ name! Many blessings to you, and much love as well!

    Love,
    Cheryl

    • Cheryl, you always open my eyes! I haven’t posted a DV poem in a while as I thought I was “wallowing” in my past. I know I don’t live there now, but you help me see God’s purpose in my sharing – thank you my beloved sister. If it means setting another woman or child free I shall keep “shouting”! God’s peace and joy to you beautiful 😉

  4. Thank you for sharing how you do, Diana . . . you have a special ministry. hugs and God bless you.

    • Thank you Debbie, God is able to bring us all through the worst of times, He is so faithful. Hugs to you too. 😉

  5. I had the opportunity to spend some time volunteering in a shelter in Sitka Alaska. I learned a lot from a few mom’s who were willing to share their stories with me. Abuse takes so many forms, and though it’s not always men against women, it seems to be that way more often than not. As women it is so important for us to reach out and lean on one another for support, understanding and love. I’m so proud of you for sharing and sincerely hope you continue to use poetry, blogging and other creative outlets to help you through this time. I am sending you love and prayers.
Namaste. May your journey give you meaning and fulfillment.

    • Thank you Kacie, you bring us hope and light! I can’t imagine going to Alaska, I am not a snowbird….God bless you for volunteering. I can’t tell you what a blessing the volunteers were to me, just having someone to listen to me helped make it real. My denial was so powerful.
