Butterfly – a Tribute to Those We Lost Suddenly

Butterfly

Like a butterfly you came and went,
Here one moment gone the next
How I wish that I had wings
I remember our adventures
All the times we laughed and cried
How I wish we had more time

I’d follow you to Heavens gate
Listen to Jesus call your name
Watch your sorrows slip away
You’re finally free,
Fly home, butterfly, fly home

Every time I see a butterfly I think of you
Not here to stay, just passing through
I know this world is not our home
But idk if I can walk it alone
“God can you please tell me why?”
I’m sorry I didn’t get to say goodbye

I’d follow you to Heavens gate
Listen to Jesus call your name
Watch your sorrows slip away
You’re finally free,
Fly home, butterfly, fly home

You broke the mold that you were in
Came out transformed in everything
I cant wait until our rendezvous
When I can meet you in the air
I’m listening for that trumpet blast
When we can be together at last

I’d follow you to Heavens gate
Listen to Jesus call your name
Watch your sorrows slip away
You’re finally free,
Fly home, butterfly, fly home

You soar above this world and its troubles
Flying free without any struggles
Papa God collected all your tears
Turns out they were our prayers

I’d follow you to Heavens gate
Listen to Jesus call your name
Watch your sorrows slip away
You’re finally free,
Fly home, butterfly, fly home

  1. beautiful poem, it’s too bad some people aren’t even acknowledge they exist..my son hasn’t even seen his family since before 9/11 because no one wants to be the bigger person and reach out or respond. it really tests my faith because these people are cozy in their home and daily living. where is God?? i believe in Him but you can become jaded, especially younger people with no family support

    • I am so sorry Cathleen. It would test my faith too. Not all of my kids keep in touch either, it hurts. I usually just call them first, then I can say I tried. Prayers for you and your son to reconnect with you in Jesus Name

  2. After my son died my daughter was working in her garden and she saw a butterfly one of its wings was torn and she thought of her brother and felt it was a message from God saying he was now healed and in heaven ….beautiful poem. Thank you and God bless you!

  3. Every time I see a butterfly, I think of the movie The Ultimate Gift.

Reading Diana’s poem just makes me reflect on the darkness I was forced into at 15 when I had to face fears I didn’t know existed at my Mom’s funeral.

If anyone is dealing with the gaping holes left from loss and grief…it will subside. Whatever you do, whatever others tell you – don’t be afraid to cry… Tears are God’s way of cleaning out our emotions and like Diana’s butterfly they float up as ether and are collected for safekeeping at God’s Throne. 💙

    • Yes, tears are healing. I’m sorry about your Mom. My mom left this world too. Prayers and hugs, Diana

      • Took me decades to really understand why tears are a good thing, though the world wouldn’t likely agree.

My Dad died shortly thereafter… and your response makes wonder if maybe I haven’t actually fully healed from Dad’s loss since he passed not long after.

        • I don’t know if we ever fully get over it on this side of Heaven. I am grateful that Love never dies
