This is a poem I wrote back in 2003. I used to go to a lot of 12 step meetings trying to “find myself”. As a result of that, I put a lot of labels on who I thought I was. I was wrong. Today I let God define who I am.
These are my thoughts, and I do not intend to offend anyone going to a 12 step program. I did for about 10-15 years. It helped me for a time. I’m just saying, there is more. God can and will deliver us. There is healing and deliverance in Jesus Christ.
ADDICTIONS
What if addictions were a lie?
What if the cravings – want to, got to have it,
weren’t reality?
What if the truth could set you free?
What is what is – is yet to be?
What if He’ll give you eyes to see?
The difference between lies and reality.
So stop, be still, He’s there.
Admit you can’t – He can.
He can – He will – He did.
He died for you and for me;
and paid the price for all eternity.
You’ve accepted that – confessed it too.
Now just be still.
Accept His Life –
He died to give it to you.
GOD’S PROMISE TO YOU:
So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:16-17 NIV)

MY PRAYER FOR YOU:
Dear Lord,
You know who we are, we were made in Your image. Forgive us for thinking we knew all the answers. Open our eyes to see us from Your perspective today. We cast down any high and lofty thought we have about ourselves that has risen to be King of our imagination. You alone are King Jesus. Show us who we are Lord, in Jesus Name.

Sometimes addiction will lead you to Jesus. I am not saying addiction is a good thing. Love your poem. Thank you for sharing, Diana.
So awesome and so true. Though I’ve never had substance issues my past depression is really part of an underlying family that includes substance, alcohol, eating and all addictions. God healed me completely and support groups were part of my process. However only explicitly Christian based support groups with an agenda of once and for all total healing through Jesus Christ was effective. Those based on AA’s 12 principles didn’t lead to victory. That’s because the co-founder of AA, Bill W. and his wife were known occultists that used a ouija board and seances to come up with the steps. This is a well known and easily Googled fact. AA will tell you to look to a “higher power” but there is no other name under heaven by which men can be saved.

Thanks for sharing! I was wondering if you would mind me asking you a question… I’m currently taking an addictions class at my church but although I’ve never been, I have several friends who have spent years in 12 step programs and I noticed one big difference. I almost always hear that relapse is inevitable. It’s part of the learning process. However, at my church class they teach that relapse doesn’t have to happen, because we’ve already been freed from our addictions (based on 2 Peter 1:10). So I guess my question is, what’s your opinion on the matter? Does relapse have to happen? And if it does, how do we prevent from using that as an excuse to use?
It has been my experience that if I call myself an alcoholic, I will drink. If I call myself a drug addict I will use. As a man thinketh, so he becomes. If I think I am an addict, and can never recover, then at some point I will use again, because that is what an addict does. Same for alcohol, or affected family member, or whatever.
Only through the new identity that I have found in Christ am I able to shake off the chains of who I thought I was. I am glad I was wrong. I don’t have it all figured out yet, but I am learning. I still battle with smoking. I didn’t start smoking till I went to my first AA meeting, go figure.
So, after all that, I would have to agree with your church group. Relapse is not necessary if you can change your thinking and come into agreement with who God says we are.
