A HOMELESS MAN

© 2013 D Rasmussen
homelessmanStanding on the corner, holding a cardboard sign,
Can you spare a dollar? It is cold out tonight.
You see for a moment and then you look away,
Do I really matter? You go on your way.
I’m clinging to my backpack, it’s all that I have.
I lost my hope awhile ago, now I’m just sad.
You saw me today, I like to walk by your house.
You look right through me here, like I am a ghost.
I ride the city bus, all day for just a buck.
I can look out the window, I’m down on my luck.
There is a seat next to me, but you turn your head.
Suddenly you decide you want to stand instead.
I find food at the shelter and sometimes a bed,
or if not, I see a big bridge just up ahead.
To you I don’t matter, I have nothing to give,
You really think this is how I want to live?
To you I’m a homeless man who you never knew.
What if I’m a diamond dressed in poverty?
Maybe I’m a great pearl hiding in this disguise.
What if I’m a treasure waiting to be renewed?
Why won’t you look at me, are you just afraid?
I might be a reflection of your own poverty.

  1. Diana – this was powerful…

“Why won’t you look at me, are you just afraid?
I might be a reflection of your own poverty.”

It makes me wonder, how many times have we looked away from Jesus? Or perhaps we had the chance to entertain angels unaware, but were too afraid to look at someone else’s poverty, because as you said, it might reveal our own.

    Really beautiful, my friend!

  2. Diana, these lines are so true – I love them:

    Well done, my sister!
    In His love,
    Maria

    • Thank you beautiful. My husband and I spent 2 years helping out at our local homeless shelter. I was so humbled, and blessed.

      • Wow, Diana! All I can think of is that Jesus will say to you that, since you did this to the least of these, you did this to Him! He will commend you, His loving child! Often it pops into my mind that there are probably all kinds of people we never notice who are absolutely amazing – treasures, pearls.
You really planning to write poems for 30 days? I pray you do! I checked out the site and it sounds like fun, but I made a promise to write for my blog only once a week.

    • Thank you. I was homeless for a while too. It was such a struggle to just get through the day. God can and does restore all things, thank you Jesus!
